Neil Armstrong flew seventy-eight combat missions in the Korean War in Grumman Panthers, then joined NASA as a civilian test pilot. He flew the X-15 at seven times the speed of sound before commanding Gemini 8, the first orbital docking, in 1966.
On July 20, 1969, he stepped off the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle onto the Sea of Tranquility and became the first person to walk on the moon. He spent the rest of his life avoiding celebrity, taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati, and served on the Rogers Commission after the Challenger disaster.
