Amelia Earhart.
Amelia Earhart set aviation records across most of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1932 she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, from Newfoundland to a pasture in Northern Ireland. Three years later she flew solo from Honolulu to Oakland, the first person of either gender to do so.
In 1937, attempting a circumnavigation with navigator Fred Noonan, her Lockheed Electra disappeared over the central Pacific near Howland Island. She was declared lost in absentia at forty. Her disappearance is one of the enduring open cases of twentieth-century aviation.
