## Namesake: Erich Hartmann
Lived: 1922 to 1993
Erich Hartmann is, by pilot record alone, the most successful fighter pilot in aviation history, with 352 aerial victories logged on the Eastern Front between 1942 and 1945. His nickname among peers was Bubi, and his flying style relied on getting close before firing rather than deflection shooting.
After the war Hartmann spent ten years in Soviet captivity before returning to Germany in 1955. He helped rebuild the postwar Bundeswehr air arm and retired as an Oberstleutnant in 1970. His autobiography reads as an aviator's record more than a soldier's, and his flying is still studied.
