From Avian, you've got 22 miles of red-rock trail ten minutes northwest, a 14,115-foot summit fifteen minutes west, and a mesa with city-wide views ten minutes east. You can finish a conference call and be on dirt before your coffee gets cold.

Here are the hikes worth knowing, ranked by how fast you can get there from 217 S. Weber Street. All drive times clocked from the front door. Trail access is one of the better reasons to pick [the downtown core](/blog/downtown-colorado-springs-living) over the suburbs.

## What's the closest hike to downtown Colorado Springs?

Garden of the Gods. 1805 N. 30th Street. About 3.5 miles from Avian, a ten-minute drive up I-25 or Cascade Avenue. National Natural Landmark, 1,300 acres of sandstone tilted at angles that look wrong from a distance. Free. Always [has been, since the land was deeded to the city in 1909](https://gardenofgods.com/park-history/) with the condition that it stay "forever free."

[Park hours](https://gardenofgods.com/park-info/) run 5:00 am to 10:00 pm May through October, 5:00 am to 9:00 pm the rest of the year. That early opening is the whole game if you want a sunrise hike with nobody on the trail. You can be back at Avian by 7:30.

Five trails worth your time inside the park (full [trail map and details here](https://gardenofgods.com/activities/hiking-trails/)):

- Perkins Central Garden Trail. 1.5 miles roundtrip, paved, flat enough for a stroller. The one you take when your parents visit. Thirty minutes of walking through the tallest formations without thinking about footing. Less than a 30-foot rise.

- Siamese Twins Trail. 1 mile roundtrip, easy, with a specific payoff: a frame of Pikes Peak through the gap in the twin rock. Under 150 feet of climb. Lock-screen shot.

- Ridge Trail. Half-mile loop, moderate, under 100 feet of gain. You're up against the rocks instead of looking at them from the path below.

- Scotsman / Buckskin Charlie Trail. A moderate loop through the outer sections. Fewer people, distant views of the central formations, rocky footing.

- Gateway / Central Garden combo. 2.5 miles, easy, starts at the Overflow Parking Lot. Paved the whole way. Connects to the Central Garden Trail and the short loops at the base of the biggest formations.

The [Visitor & Nature Center](https://gardenofgods.com/park-info/) (9:00 am to 6:00 pm in summer) hands out free digital trail maps at the info desk. They also run a daily guided nature walk at 10:30 am. 45 to 60 minutes, $5, reservations required. The free summer shuttle runs in peak months if parking gets tight.

## What if I want Garden of the Gods views but fewer people?

Red Rock Canyon Open Space. 3550 W. High Street. About 3 miles from Avian, eight minutes west. The less famous sibling. That's [the point](https://redrockcanyonopenspace.org/).

Same red sandstone, same tilted formations, roughly a third of the foot traffic. The trails connect to the Intemann system running west into Manitou Springs. You can piece together 1 to 3.3 miles, with around 350 feet of gain.

Two off-leash dog loops. A free-ride bike park. Views of Garden of the Gods from the opposite side. You're looking at the formations everyone else is standing inside.

## Where can I hike near downtown without getting in a car?

Midland Trail. Walk southwest from Avian toward America the Beautiful Park (126 Cimino Drive), about ten blocks, and you hit the eastern end of this 7.8-mile out-and-back. It runs from downtown all the way west to Manitou Springs along an old railroad grade.

Mostly flat, 282 feet of gain across the whole thing. Sections run along streets in the middle, so it's no wilderness experience. For a weekday evening when you want to move your legs without driving, it's the best thing inside walking distance of the building. Pairs well with the [restaurants on Tejon Street](/blog/restaurants-walking-distance-downtown-colorado-springs) if you want to finish at a patio.

Monument Valley Park (next door to America the Beautiful Park, along Cascade Avenue) has paved paths along Monument Creek for a shorter, fully urban option. More walk than hike, but it's right there.

## What's the best after-work hike with a real view?

Palmer Park. 3650 Maizeland Road. About 4.5 miles east of Avian, ten minutes up Nevada Avenue or Union Boulevard.

The park sits on a 737-acre mesa looking out over the entire city. Six miles of trails, 1,299 feet of total gain, Pikes Peak filling the western horizon, plains rolling east. Packed dirt and sandstone slabs underfoot. It's open enough that you get sunlight until actual sunset, which makes it the best weekday-evening hike when you don't want to rush.

There's an enclosed off-leash dog park, a separate off-leash zone with wide-open views, and enough trail to pick anywhere between a 20-minute loop and a full hour. Dogs stay leashed everywhere except the off-leash areas.

## What's the bucket-list hike everyone talks about?

The Manitou Incline. Trailhead at Ruxton Avenue in Manitou Springs. About 7 miles from Avian, fifteen minutes west on Colorado Avenue.

A decommissioned cable car track that [climbs 2,000 vertical feet in just under a mile](https://coloradosprings.gov/parks/page/manitou-incline). Calling it a hike undersells it. Roughly 2,700 railroad-tie stairs at an average grade of 41%, peaking at 68%. Regulars track their times. A strong time is under 30 minutes. A normal first-timer is 45 to 70.

You come down via the top 4 miles of Barr Trail. You can't descend the Incline. One-way up, and the rule exists because the grade is too steep, the trail is too crowded, and going down stairs that pitched is how people get hurt.

[Free online reservation](https://coloradosprings.gov/parks/page/manitou-incline) required before you hike. Book through the City of Colorado Springs parks page.

## What if I want to summit Pikes Peak on foot?

Barr Trail. 515 Ruxton Avenue in Manitou Springs (same parking as the Incline). About 7 miles from Avian, fifteen minutes.

The classic route. 12 miles one-way from Manitou Springs to the [14,115-foot summit](https://www.pikespeak.us.com/), 7,800 vertical feet of climb. Day hikers usually start around 4:00 am so they're off the summit before afternoon thunderstorms build. Colorado high-country lightning is no joke and it arrives most summer afternoons by 1:00 pm.

You don't have to do the whole thing. The trail breaks into sections. A popular shorter version is the first 3 miles up to Barr Camp at 10,200 feet, where you get hot food, cabins, and a place to turn around without committing to the full day.

## What's the best waterfall hike near downtown?

Helen Hunt Falls and Seven Bridges. Both start from the North Cheyenne Canon Park trailhead at 3440 N. Cheyenne Canon Road. About 5 miles from Avian, ten minutes south.

Helen Hunt Falls is a 0.6-mile roundtrip with 298 feet of gain. The trail follows a cascading stream to a 35-foot waterfall next to a stone stairway. You could do it in dress shoes if you had to.

Seven Bridges starts from the same lot and runs 5.7 miles with 1,597 feet of gain, following North Cheyenne Creek across seven wooden bridges. The trail climbs steadily, which thins crowds out past the first bridge. Good shade for summer.

Both trails live inside North Cheyenne Canon Park, which also has Mt. Cutler (1.88 miles roundtrip, 588 feet of gain, city and canyon views) and the Columbine Trail (longer out-and-back along the canyon floor).

## What should I know before I go?

Four things that actually matter at 6,035 feet.

Start early in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms arrive on a schedule. If you're on an exposed summit or ridge after noon between June and September, you're gambling. The rule locals follow: be heading downhill by 1:00 pm.

Drink more water than you think. [Colorado Springs sits at 6,035 feet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_Springs,_Colorado) above sea level, and most trails climb from there. The dry air pulls moisture faster than you'll notice. A headache by 2:00 pm means you didn't drink enough. Water is part of why the city's [overall living costs land where they do](/blog/cost-of-living-colorado-springs). Cheap to live, expensive on your water bottle if you're hiking three times a week.

Download offline maps. Cell signal drops fast once you're in a canyon or behind a ridge. Garden of the Gods has coverage throughout. Red Rock Canyon, Cheyenne Canon, and Barr Trail have dead zones. AllTrails lets you download maps ahead of time.

Dogs stay leashed. Every park listed here, except designated off-leash areas (the Garden of the Gods dog area between Rock Ledge Ranch and 30th Street, Red Rock Canyon's dog loops, and Palmer Park's fenced zone). Rattlesnakes are active April through October. A leashed dog is one you can pull back.
